North Keppel is the largest island in the national park. Fringing reefs, nine beaches and a varied landscape of rugged cliffs, steep grass clad hills, windswept shrublands, woodland and palm groves cater for a range of bushwalking and nature appreciation activities.

The camp ground at Considine Beach has composting toilets and bush showers. Taps throughout the camping area provide bore water. The bore water is suitable only for washing. Visitors must bring their own drinking water supply. A minimum of five litres a day per person is recommended.Livistona palms and other small trees are scattered through the camp ground but shade is limited. Sand flies and mosquitoes can be prolific so an ample supply of insect repellent is essential. Brushtail possums are common around the campground, secure your food well and do not feed them.

From the Considine Beach camp ground a gently-sloping walking track winds 2km through a variety of woodland types to Mazie Bay, once an Aboriginal campsite. For the more adventurous, hilltops on the eastern side of the island offer spectacular views of the ocean, islands and coast. The fringing reefs at Mazie Bay are exposed at very low tides and are accessible to reef walkers. Set out on the ebbing tide and walk in sand channels. Although coral growth on these reefs is less diverse and luxuriant than that seen on coral reefs further from the mainland, they support a variety of fish, invertebrate and plant life.

Camping on North Keppel

A maximum of 75 campers is permitted on the island at any time. Air tank compressors are restricted to the southern end of the campground. Note that spearfishing is banned within 400 metres of the southern and western side of the island . The anchorage off Considine beach is sheltered from all but westerly winds.

  North Keppel Environmental Education Centre

Education Queensland operates an environmental education centre on a lease at North Keppel Island. The Centre provides Queensland students with unique learning experiences that focus on environmental education, including ecologically sustainable living. QPWS supports this initiative through assistance with program planning and centre management, access to the centre is by appointment only although the centre has an open day once a year. I went on an open day trip a few years ago and came away very impressed with the facility and the enthusiasm of all the staff, it must be terrifically exciting and interesting for the students many of whome come from inland and don't often get the opportunity to relate to the sea with all it's pleasure and wonder. Visit their comprehensive website here.
