  Byfield

Byfield is about 40km. north of Yeppoon on a sealed and well maintained road, the area has a higher rainfall than the rest of the coast, this makes it markedly different with rainforests dissected by numerous fresh water streams, the largest of which is Waterpark Creek. Apart from the Primary School, Byfield Store and the Community Hall there is no real town, the residents preferring to live on bush acreages scattered through the forest, this has given rise to the widely held but quite erroneous belief that the area is full of hippies or, worse, “ferals” like Nimbin is, nothing could be further from the truth.

Overnight Accomodation
Waterpark Creek is what you would expect in a North Queensland rainforest with long stretches of broad water fringed by rampant growth, canoes and an ecotour are available to explore this waterway, there are no crocodiles.

The cool greenness, seclusion and tranquility of the forest has made it a popular getaway destination for those wishing to recharge their batteries in the bosom of nature, camping, cabins and B&B's provide alternatives for all budgets. More

Things to do
Except when it's raining the Byfield rainforests are dry underfoot so you're not slithering through mud or fighting off Leeches and God only knows what other invertebrate abominations, this allows a more civilised enjoyment of these ancient forests, keep an eye out for the Byfield Fern, a living fossil and found only here. Simple pleasures are what draws people to Byfield so if your only idea of a good time is razzmataz, hoopla and purse-draining outlay then perhaps you're better off elsewhere. However if you're normal the bushwalks, canoeing, eco-tour, abundant bird life, intriguing flora and peace will be rewarding and you can always enjoy a rollicking evening at the Ferns Hideaway.
